Coast to coast - Whitehaven to Tynemouth
140 miles over 3 days
Thank you to all patients /friends and family for their donations towards Dentaid we have managed to raise a staggering £2500.00.
Friday 30th July
We woke up early to a full cooked breakfast in a dodgy bed and breakfast that resembled faulty towers !
Set off with a little intrepidation of what was to follow, with 60 miles of cycling to do today.
First big climb was early in the day and was long and particularly testing.
Made it lunch time in Keswick to refuel before a long afternoon of more cycling.
About 25 miles left for the day, some more climbs and a quick stop for homemade scones and jam saw us finish the day in Penrith.
Saturday 31st July
Woke up bright and early again to a full English breakfast this seems to be the only food available in Cumbria!
Legs and behind very sore from a long day yesterday!
We were told that today would be tough and we soon found this to be the case with a steep climb out of Penrith. We were very lucky with the weather despite there being a forecast of rain all weekend!
There were beautiful views on offer all around us as we headed out further into the wilderness.
Following a brief sprint down into the valley we hit the bottom of a three mile climb up to the highest part of the ride.
A slow, monotonous and painful climb saw us reach the summit with relief palpable all round!
After a brief stop we headed off with the prospect of another 30 miles of climbs and descents to look forward to!
The range of hills we crossed were huge and gave very testing moments as well as some very fast downhill sections.
We arrived at our bed and breakfast at about 5.00pm after a full and thoroughly exhausting day.
Everyone was in high spirits realising most of the hard work is out of the way and we had a nice meal near the centre of Consett.
Sunday 1st August
Despite being very tired from our previous two days, spirits were high on the morning of the last day with the knowledge that most of the hard work had been done.
The final day was 34 miles of flat or downhill cycling through Newcastle and Tynemouth areas in lovely sunshine. We finished the ride around midday just in time for fresh fish and chips as a reward on the quay in Tynemouth.
